Our Reading Stars reading classes at Clairmont Advanced Education Center are dynamic, fun-filled, and educational programs specifically designed for kids to learn, develop, and enhance their reading and writing skills. In these clubs, students dive into the world of letters and words through an array of multisensory games, creative activities, art projects, and catchy songs. Perfectly suited for children who are striving to reach or exceed their reading level, or for those who need that extra boost in reading confidence, our reading classes are meticulously crafted to meet the individual needs of each student. We begin with a complimentary initial pre-course assessment to tailor the academic content specifically to each child’s needs.

Additionally, we conduct regular, full F&P reading assessments to track progress, all at no additional cost to parents.

At Clairmont Advanced Education Center, we proudly guide our 3rd-grade students on their literacy journey in our Reading Stars course. Building upon the solid foundation laid by our 2nd Grade Reading Stars program, we pivot our focus in third grade to significantly enhance Reading Comprehension and Writing skills. This transition includes an in-depth exploration of additional spelling rules, like the nuanced ‘c’ or ‘s’ spelling rule.

A Diverse Approach

Our program employs a unique, multi-sensory approach, which not only aligns perfectly with the diverse learning styles of our students but also effectively prepares them for school assessments and standardized exams. Central to this approach is fostering independent study skills and instilling a deep-rooted confidence in each child. As part of our comprehensive curriculum, students are taught to adeptly highlight and identify key elements within texts. This skill is crucial for bolstering comprehension and enhancing recall, ensuring that students are not only confident readers but also thoughtful, analytical thinkers.

  • Phonics Skills
    Including advanced spelling rules, the ‘ei/ie’ rule, dropping the silent ‘e’, doubling the last consonant, rules for words ending in ‘y’ (i.e. city/cities), the soft ‘g’ rule, the soft ‘c’ rule, contractions, and much more.
  • Topic, Main Idea, and Details Identification
    Using tools like pictures, tactile main idea bags, organizational charts, text & highlighters for color-coding information, and answering comprehension questions following each passage.
  • Writing Process Skills
    Including adding more details to sentences, brainstorming techniques, note-taking skills such as Webbing/Mind Mapping, and expanding simple paragraphs into extended ones

Reading Stars Sample Day

A Sample 1st Grade Day Working On /oo/
4:15pm: Drop-off
4:15pm-4:40pm: Reading Jenga (Earn Tickets while playing Reading Jenga – colored Jenga game pieces are covered in applicable sight and phonetic review words for each different Reading Stars group)
4:40pm-5:00pm: /oo/ & /oo/ Mini-Lesson & Practice
(I.e. students pick 2 different colored ‘smelly-jelly‘ highlighters and take a pile of /oo/ word cards. Students create 2 piles, one for /oo/ words as in pool and one for /oo/ words as in book. Designate one color to be the /oo/ sound as in pool and a different color as the /oo/ sound, like in book. As you read your word cards, color in the “oo” with the correct color. Sort your cards into 2 piles. Then read both your piles to your partner. Do they agree with your sort? Finally, complete the ‘Froot Loops‘ /oo/ Crossword Puzzle Search using the same highlighting color pattern)
5:00pm-5:20pm: Reading Bowling – Skill Drilling through a fun active game (Bowling Pins are labeled with /oo/ words (i.e. pool, book, spoon, brook. Students split in teams of 2 who take turns picking up each other’s knocked down bowling pins for their opponents to read, played for tickets and prizes)
5:20pm-5:45pm: Snack & Free Play & Individual Educational 1:1 Time 
(students socialize and snack while teacher spends 1:1 educational time with each individual student working on their individual spelling and reading needs)
5:45pm-6:15pm: Spelling Battleship – Skill Drilling through a fun active multi-sensory game
(Before you can throw the lawn dart to tag your opponent’s ship out of the game, you must air write/spell today’s “oo” words! )
6:15pm: Dismissal

The student drop-off/pick-up location is at the valet booth entrance in the back of the building.
After 4:15pm pick-up and drop-off is on the third floor.
