It’s essential for students to recognize rhyming sounds, fostering auditory discrimination and enhancing their phonemic awareness. - Phonemic Awareness – Sound Position Identification:
Students learn to identify sounds at the beginning, middle, and end of words, a skill crucial for sound manipulation and word decoding. - Sound-Letter Association Foundations:
Associating specific sounds with their corresponding letters is pivotal. It lays the groundwork for effective reading and spelling. - Distinguishing Consonants and Vowels:
By understanding the roles of consonants and vowels in word construction, students can decode words more effectively and enhance pronunciation. - Phonics – VC Words Mastery:
Words like ‘it’ and ‘go’ introduce students to vowel-consonant structures, serving as building blocks for more complex words. - Phonics – The World of CVC Words:
Exploring words like ‘mom’ and ‘dog’ helps students practice consonant-vowel-consonant patterns, enhancing their reading fluency. - Phonics – Delving into CVCC Words:
With words such as ‘bank’ and ‘dirt’, students encounter consonant-vowel-consonant-consonant patterns, expanding their word recognition skills. - The Magic of ‘Silent’ E Words:
Words like ‘kite’ and ‘cube’ introduce the role of silent ‘e’, a key concept in transitioning to more advanced reading levels. - Phonics – Journey into Long Vowels:
Recognizing long vowel patterns in words like ‘feet’ and ‘sail’ helps students decode and comprehend a broader range of vocabulary. - Phonics – Discovering Consonant Digraphs:
Digraphs like ‘ch’ and ‘sh’ combine two letters to produce a unique sound, further diversifying students’ phonetic understanding. - Phonics – Blending with Blends:
Blends such as ‘dr’ and ‘sp’ introduce students to the combination of consonants at the start or end of words, refining their reading and pronunciation techniques.

Phonics Fridays Sample Day
9:00AM: Drop off
9:00AM-9:30AM: Homeroom Fun
Free play/a time for students to meet and settle in for the class
9:30AM-10:00AM: Early Phonics Game
I.e. Students play with their partners, taking turns reading their tailored words intermittently while playing Color Wars, Tic-Tac-Toe, 6-in-a-Row, etc.
10:00AM-10:45AM: Multi-Sensory Drilling Game (Passive)
I.e. Make Phonics booklets. Each student makes a phonics booklet [arts & crafts] based on the individualized skill they are practicing that day.
10:45AM-11:30AM: Reading and Spelling Game (Active)
I.e. Horseshoe Splashers. During each student’s turn, they have to identify the correct middle vowel sound of the given word, before tossing their horseshoe! A missed horseshoe or incorrect vowel and the other team can splash you with the water squitter (summer months only)!
11:30AM-12:30PM: Snack Time/Free Play & Individual Educational 1:1 Time
After snack, students play while teacher spends 1:1 educational time with each student individually – working on their tailored academia such as mastering reading and spelling of their phonetic words and skills
12:30PM-1:15PM: Read Aloud (Passive)
Followed by reading comprehension game or reading phonics card games like “Snap it Up” or “Rotten Apple”
1:15PM-2:00PM: Reading and Spelling Game (Active)
I.e. Musical Stars – review through a fun & active, multi-sensory game. Students take turns playing both musicians and dancers in a fun educational twist on the classic game musical chairs, winning tickets and prizes by reading and spelling phonics words.
2:00PM-3:00PM: Phonics Art (Passive)
I.e. Word Necklaces. How many rhyming words can you build on your rhyming necklace?
3:00PM: Dismissal
