Handwriting Stars Workshop
For Kids in Kindergarten – 3rd Grade
Handwriting Proficiency
The Handwriting Stars workshop at Clairmont Advanced Education Center is an engaging series designed to bolster kids’ mastery of letter strokes. Our goal is to help children enhance their handwriting skills through a range of effective strategies, regardless of their current proficiency level. During the workshop, we provide a diverse set of enjoyable activities that integrate learning both indoors and outdoors.
Learning the Fun Way
Through playful games, creative arts and crafts, and interactive exercises, children will engage with the material in a fun and interactive way. Join us and witness the transformation of your child’s handwriting as they participate in our dynamic Handwriting Stars workshop series. Their journey towards excellent handwriting and penmanship starts here!
Correcting Letter Reversals
Letter reversals are a common occurrence up until 2nd grade. However, these reversals can become a significant impediment to reading progress. Gaining mastery in letter writing frees up mental bandwidth for higher cognitive processes necessary for reading proficiency. In our Handwriting Stars Workshop, we address letter reversals by teaching correct letter formation and categorizing letters based on similar stroke patterns.
Learning by Letter Groups
For instance, the “Cannon Pop Letters” group, which includes ‘c,’ ‘a,’ ‘d,’ ‘g,’ ‘o,’ and ‘q,’ all start with a “c” stroke. Teaching letters in this way aids children in forming mental images of each letter, thus enhancing their visual memory of commonly reversed letters. Knowing that ‘d’ is a “Cannon Pop” and ‘b’ is a “Bouncer,” children are less likely to reverse them. We group letters based on stroke similarity, a technique that plays a crucial role in mitigating letter reversals. Our methodology encourages continuous stroke techniques to decrease the frequency of ‘lifting-the-pencil.
Lowercase First
We prioritize the mastery of lowercase print since these are the letter forms most often encountered in reading, writing, and spelling. Our multi-sensory teaching approach caters to all learning styles, and we also instruct students on proper pencil grip and paper positioning!
Paragraph Writing and Sentence Structure Too
For our 2nd and 3rd graders, the Handwriting Stars program is so much more than just perfecting their script. While neat handwriting is a vital skill, we believe that effective communication involves mastery in spelling, grammar, and punctuation. Therefore, our classes incorporate elements of language arts to provide a comprehensive learning experience. Through exciting activities and games, we help students understand the building blocks of sentences, grasp spelling patterns, and learn proper usage of punctuation. Our program cultivates not just competent writers, but also confident communicators!
